A butterfly belonging to the family Lycaenidae in the order Lepidoptera of the class Insecta. It is found in the cold regions of Eurasia, from northeastern Europe to northern East Asia, and in Japan it is endemic to Hokkaido, where it has been designated a national natural monument without specifying any particular region. It is known as an alpine butterfly in Hokkaido, but in 1982 it was discovered growing in the plains of Nemuro as well. In neighboring areas of Japan it is found in Sakhalin, the Kuril Islands, and the Korean Peninsula (northern mountain region). It appears once a year, from July to August.
