Karafutoruri Shijimi (English name) Cranberry Blue

A butterfly belonging to the family Lycaenidae in the order Lepidoptera of the class Insecta. It is found in the cold regions of Eurasia, from northeastern Europe to northern East Asia, and in Japan it is endemic to Hokkaido, where it has been designated a national natural monument without specifying any particular region. It is known as an alpine butterfly in Hokkaido, but in 1982 it was discovered growing in the plains of Nemuro as well. In neighboring areas of Japan it is found in Sakhalin, the Kuril Islands, and the Korean Peninsula (northern mountain region). It appears once a year, from July to August. Its food plants, which have been observed in Hokkaido, are the black crowberry and the Japanese black bean.

昆虫綱鱗翅(りんし)目シジミチョウ科に属するチョウ。ヨーロッパの北東部より東アジアの北部にわたるユーラシアの寒冷地に分布し、日本では北海道の特産種で、地域を定めず国の天然記念物に指定されている。北海道では高山チョウとして知られているが、1982年（昭和57）根室(ねむろ)の平地にも発生していることが発見された。日本の近隣地域では樺太（サハリン）、千島列島、朝鮮半島（北部山地）に分布する。年1回の発生で、7～8月に出現する。北海道で観察された食草はガンコウランおよびクロマメノキである。
