...The company's headquarters are in Memphis, Tennessee, and it operates over 1,700 motels and hotels worldwide, with a total of approximately 280,000 rooms. Its founder, Kemmons Wilson (1913- ), was motivated to enter the industry by his indignation at the poor service of motels at the time during a family car vacation in 1951. The following year, he opened a motel in Memphis that introduced some innovative management policies, such as not charging extra for children's beds. He then recruited people who wanted to run motels, and by contract, he leased the Holiday Inn trademark, provided guidance on construction and operation, and shared advertising and reservations, and succeeded in rapidly expanding the chain network through a method known as franchising. ...
