A town in Otokuni County in the southern part of Kyoto Prefecture. Occupying low marshes where the Katsura, Uji and Kizu rivers converge, and with Mount Tennozan as its base, the town was a strategic military, transportation and commercial location as the gateway to the Kyoto Basin, and was the site of the Battle of Yamazaki. Even today, it remains an important location, with the Tokaido Main Line, Hankyu Kyoto Line, Meishin Expressway and National Route 171 passing through it. Machinery and Western liquor factories are located here, and the town is undergoing rapid residential development. The town is famous for Oyamazaki Jinin, who obtained the privileges of an oil dealer in the Middle Ages. It is home to the Rikyu Hachimangu Shrine, which is said to be the god of oil, and Myoki-an, a Rinzai sect temple with a teahouse called Tai-an (a national treasure). Area: 5.97 km2 . 京都府南部,乙訓(おとくに)郡の町。桂川,宇治川,木津川が合流する低湿地を占め,天王山があり,京都盆地の門戸として軍事・交通・商業上の要衝をなし,山崎の戦の戦場となった。現在も東海道本線,阪急京都線,名神高速道路,国道171号線が通じる要地で,機械,洋酒の工場も立地,宅地化も著しい。中世油座の特権を得て油売に従事した大山崎神人(じにん)で有名。油の神様とされる離宮八幡宮,茶室待庵(国宝)をもつ臨済宗妙喜庵がある。5.97km2。1万5121人(2010)。
