A general term for birds of the Indicatoridae family of woodpeckers. Birds of this family are 12-20 cm long, have short, thick beaks, and short legs, but have strong, sharp claws and antipodes. Their plumage is brown, olive, or gray above and white or gray below. They live alone in pairs in the tropical rainforests of Africa and Asia, catching insects in trees or in the air. They are particularly fond of wasp larvae and pupae, and beeswax from beehives. As the name honeyguide suggests, at least two species, the black-throated honeyguide Indicator indicator (illustration) and the long-striped honeyguide I. variegatus , are known for guiding humans and honey badgers to beehives.
