SED - Surface-conduction electron-emitter display

SED - Surface-conduction electron-emitter display

A type of thin display. It is a display device that uses a display element called a surface-conduction electron-emitter, and can realize a bright, high-contrast screen like a CRT on a large flat display. The principle is the same as with a CRT, where electrons are bombarded with a light-emitting surface coated with a fluorescent material to cause light to be emitted. In a CRT, an electron gun emits electrons to cause all pixels to emit light, but with an SED, an electron-emitting part is placed on each pixel, making it easy to make the display thinner and larger, and it consumes less power, so it was expected to be a technology that would realize the next generation of large, thin TVs.

Research and development was centered on SED, a joint venture between Canon and Toshiba, but a patent lawsuit arose with Applied Nanotech Holdings, an American company, regarding the core technology of SED, and Toshiba withdrew from SED entirely. In 2007, SED became a wholly owned subsidiary of Canon, and mass production and sales plans for SED panels were postponed indefinitely. Regarding the patent dispute in the United States, Canon's victory was finalized in November 2008.
