A branch of the Fujiwara clan called the Muto clan during the time of Yorihira. Yorihira participated in the uprising of Minamoto no Yoritomo, and was later appointed as a warrior's official. Muto is said to refer to the Fujiwara clan as a warrior's official. His son, Sukeyori, was appointed as Dazai Shoni and Chinzei Magistrate, and went down to Chikuzen Province. His descendants also served as shugoshoku (military governors) of the northern Kyushu region, and from the time of Tsunesuke in the mid-Kamakura period, they called themselves the Shoni clan.
