Although piecemeal analyses of the location of economic activities have been conducted for a long time, the first fully systematic analysis was JH Thünen's theory of agricultural location (Isolated Country, 1826). Thünen clarified that in an abstract isolated country, a fairly clear concentric structure exists in which the main products differ depending on the distance from the city, based on the relationship between production costs when market prices are constant and transportation costs to the city.
