An old town in Mito District, located in the central-southern part of Okayama Prefecture, consisting of the valley plain of Asahikawa and the surrounding plateau. The main settlement, Kanagawa, was a castle town of Matsuda, the deputy governor of Bizen during the Nanboku-cho period, and in the Edo period it was the site of a jinya (camp) for the Okayama Domain's chief retainer, and flourished as a river port and post town. It is home to Myokaku-ji Temple, the head temple of the Nichiren sect of Buddhism, Fujubuse school. Yams, fruit trees, and shiitake mushrooms are cultivated here. In March 2005, it was incorporated into Nadasaki Town, Kojima District, and Okayama City. 114.42 km2 . 岡山県中南部,旭川の谷底平野と周辺高原からなる御津郡の旧町。主集落金川(かながわ)は南北朝時代には備前守護代松田氏の城下町で,江戸時代には岡山藩家老の陣屋が置かれ,河港,宿場町として栄えた。日蓮宗不受不施派本山妙覚寺がある。ヤマノイモ,果樹,シイタケを栽培。2005年3月児島郡灘崎町と岡山市へ編入。114.42km2。1万462人(2003)。
