A species of bird in the family Jungle Nightjar, or a general term for the family Jungle Nightjar. The Jungle Nightjar, Caprimulgus indicus (illustration), is about 29 cm long. Its entire body is black-brown with complex reddish-brown and yellowish-brown patterns, making it easy to confuse with fallen leaves and dead branches. There are white spots in the center of the throat, wings, and tail feathers, which are very noticeable when displaying. It is found in eastern and southern Asia east of India. It is a resident bird in the tropics, but those in temperate zones migrate south in winter. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
