Mitsui Chemicals Inc.
A Mitsui-affiliated general chemical manufacturer. It is the second largest in Japan after Mitsubishi Chemical. It was established in October 1997 by the merger of Mitsui Toatsu Chemicals and Mitsui Petrochemical Industries. The merger was made smoother by the relaxation of the 25% rule by the Fair Trade Commission. It is the largest phenol manufacturer in Japan. In October 2001, it merged its polyolefin division with Sumitomo Chemical into a separate company, but the joint venture was dissolved in October 2003. In 2003, it established a joint holding company and announced a full-scale management integration of the two companies, but due to disagreements over leadership, the plan was scrapped in the same year. It has its headquarters in Tokyo, and factories in Ichihara, Nagoya, Osaka, etc. Its capital in 2011 was 125 billion yen, and its sales for the fiscal year ending March 2011 were 1,391.7 billion yen. Sales breakdown (%) is as follows: petrochemicals 31, basic chemicals 31, urethane 10, functional resins 8, processed products 10, functional chemicals 9, and others 1. Overseas sales ratio 42%.
