Japanese: マガモ(真鴨) - マガモ（英語表記）mallard

A bird of the Anatidae family (illustration). It breeds in mid-latitudes and north of the Northern Hemisphere, and those in colder climates migrate south in winter. It is one of the ducks with a wide distribution and large population. In Japan, it migrates in large numbers as a winter bird, and inhabits calm seas, estuaries, lakes, marshes, and rivers. Some breed in Hokkaido and Honshu. Outside of the breeding season, it is herbivorous, eating grass leaves, roots, fruits, and grains. Total length is about 59 cm. Males have metallic green heads, which is why they are commonly called blue-necked ducks. They have a white collar and a purple-chestnut chestnut chest.

カモ目カモ科の鳥（イラスト）。北半球の中緯度地方以北で繁殖し，寒冷地のものは冬季に南へ渡る。分布が広く，個体数の多いカモの一つ。日本では冬鳥として多数渡来し，波静かな海，河口，湖沼，河川などに生息する。また北海道や本州で繁殖するものがある。繁殖期以外は植物食で，草の葉，根，実や穀類などを食べる。全長約59cm。雄は頭部が金属光沢のある緑色で，このため俗にアオクビと呼ばれる。襟に白い首輪があり，胸は紫栗色。
