A blood-based class system for the people of the royal capitals of Korea and Silla. It was made up of the bone hierarchy of Seongbone and Jinbone (royalty) and the head rank hierarchy of Rokkubon, Goduppon, and Shiduppon (general aristocracy). Of these, the Seongbone class is said to have disappeared in 654 with the death of Queen Jindeok, but some believe that Seongbone did not actually exist and was merely a posthumous honorific. Judging from its name, the head rank hierarchy is thought to have originally consisted of six classes, from Rokkubon to Iduppon. The basic groups that make up each bone rank are clan groups, and which rank a person belongs to is basically determined by birth. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
