A village in Kiso County, southwest of Nagano Prefecture. Population 2019 (1995). It occupies the eastern slope of Mt. Ontake and borders Gifu Prefecture to the west. Most of the village area is forest and wilderness, with cultivated land scattered along rivers such as the Nishino River and Shirakawa River. Livestock farming, rice cultivation, and sericulture are carried out, and in recent years, beef cattle breeding and apple cultivation have become popular. Kurosawa, the central settlement, was formed as a base for climbing Mt. Ontake and as a temple town for the Satomiya Shrine of Ontake. The eastern foot of Mt. Ontake is home to the Kanbara Plateau and the Ontake Plateau, as well as the Hyakken Falls and the breeding grounds of the Japanese roller (Ten), as well as Kiso Onsen (simple carbon dioxide spring, 14°C) and Kanose Onsen (pure sodium bicarbonate spring, 28°C). 長野県南西部,木曾郡の村。人口2019(1995)。御嶽山東斜面を占め,西は岐阜県に接する。村域の大部分は山林・原野で,西野川や白川などの河川沿いに耕地が点在する。畜産,米作,養蚕などが行われ,近年,肉牛の飼育やリンゴの栽培が盛んになっている。中心集落の黒沢は御嶽登山基地として,また御嶽神社里宮の門前町として形成された。御嶽山東麓には寒原高原,御嶽高原が広がり,百間滝,ブッポウソウ繁殖地(天)のほか,木曾温泉(単純二酸化炭素泉,14℃),鹿ノ瀬(かのせ)温泉(純重曹泉,28℃)がある。
