A general term for compounds in which aluminum is bonded to an alkyl group. They have an aluminum-carbon bond and belong to the category of organometallic compounds. Generally, they are colorless, transparent liquids or solids with low melting points at room temperature. The most commonly used lower alkylaluminums spontaneously combust when exposed to air and react violently when in contact with water, making them extremely dangerous. The degree of reactivity generally decreases as the number of carbon atoms increases. In addition, the flash point is below the melting point. Therefore, they must be stored in an inert atmosphere.
