This refers to cannabis, also known as hashish. Its original meaning is "grass." It was introduced to Egypt around the 13th century, and while alcohol was strictly prohibited for Muslims, hashish was actually tolerated, so it spread especially in Egypt as a keif (a recreational drug) among the working masses. It is said that long-term use of hashish can cause various health problems, but there are no withdrawal symptoms, and the effects vary from person to person, with some people experiencing increased appetite and heightened hearing and vision (and vice versa).
