...an ancient civilization in India that reached its zenith around 2300-2000 BCE, centered around the Indus River basin. Harappa was discovered by DR Sahani in 1920, followed by Mohenjo Daro by RD Banerji. J. Marshall excavated Mohenjo Daro in 1922-27, E. J. H. Mackay excavated Mohenjo Daro in 1927-31, and MS Vats excavated Harappa in 1933-34.

The ruins are distributed as far as Delhi in the east, near the Iranian border on the Arabian Sea coast in the west, 200 km north of Bombay in the south, and as far north as the southern end of the Simla Hills, with one site on the banks of the Oxus River.
