A weapon carried by police officers in the Edo period to arrest criminals. It is an iron bar about 1 shaku (about 33 cm) long, with a braided cord wrapped around the handle and a right-angled hook at the base of the tsuba to catch and untangle the enemy's sword. Its origin is unclear and it does not appear in ancient documents. It is said that the Chinese Chen Yuanbin introduced it in the Keian period (1648-1652), so it is likely a weapon introduced from China in the early Edo period. The police officers and yoriki of the town magistrate's office and the fire-fighting department used silver-plated jitte with a red tassel around the handle, while the Kanto Torishiyaku used purple or light blue jitte. Crude ones were also carried by the police officers and their subordinates. In rare cases, detectives and others also carried them. They were also called "jittei" or "tegi."
