This is the effect of asset holdings on consumption expenditure, and states that for the same income, the more assets a consumer holds, the higher their consumption expenditure will be. If we look at this in terms of money, which is a liquid asset, even if the nominal amount of money in existence remains constant, if the price level falls, the real value of money will increase, which will act to increase consumption expenditure. D. Patinkin named this effect of an increase in the real value of money on an increase in consumption expenditure the real balance effect. This effect was also proposed earlier by AC Pigou. This real balance effect has been incorporated into the liquid assets hypothesis in the consumption function debate.

資産の保有が消費支出に及ぼす効果のことで，所得が同一であれば，保有する資産が多いほど消費者は消費支出を高めることになるというもの。これを流動資産である貨幣についてみてみると，かりに名目的な貨幣存在量が一定であるとしても，価格水準が低落すれば貨幣の実質価値は増大し，これが消費支出を高める方向に作用することになる。この貨幣の実質価値の増大が消費支出の増加に及ぼす効果を D.パティンキンは実質残高効果と名づけた。この効果は先に A.C.ピグーによっても提唱された。この実質残高効果は消費関数論争において，流動資産仮説の中に取入れられている。
