In this respect, the British Conservative and Labour parties were in stark contrast. It was estimated that around 1980, two-thirds of the income of the Conservative Party's central office came from corporate donations, and a study by the Labour Party Research Department estimated that in 1979-80, corporations made a total of £2.5 million in political donations, most of which went to the Conservative Party directly or indirectly through the Conservative Party's fundraising organization, the Federation of British Industry (BUI). In contrast, the Labour Party relied on trade unions for around 90% of its total income at the time.
