...refers to the mythology of the Latvians, Lithuanians, and Prussians, peoples who speak languages of the Baltic branch of the Indo-European language family. The Baltic region is known as the last remaining pagan land in Europe, and since the end of the 12th century it has been the stage for invasions by the Teutonic Knights, who aimed to eradicate paganism. Documents in Baltic languages only appeared after the 15th and 16th centuries, when Christianity began to spread, and the Baltic mythology of the pagan era has not been completely preserved. However, from the 13th century onwards, various chronicles, church inspection records, and other ancient documents handed down by German monks contain a considerable amount of information about the pagan gods, shrines, and rituals worshipped by the Baltic people.
