…He remained obscure for a long time after his death, but after the 20th century, when he was highly praised by surrealists such as Breton and Aragon, he suddenly became famous as a pioneer of surrealism and as a genius poet on a par with Rimbaud. His self-published prose poetry collection, Chants de Maldoror (1869), consists of six parts, and sings in passionate words of rebellion and curse against God, and love and hatred for humanity, with Maldoror, the incarnation of evil, as the protagonist. There is a strange harmony between unrestrained fantasy, mathematical precision, the outpouring of deep psychological emotion, and concrete expression. On the other hand, his Poesies, Preface to the Book of the Future (1870), published under his real name, takes a completely different approach, praising good deeds and faith and expressing an attitude of absolute affirmation, which is one of the mysteries of his work. …
