A seaweed of the family Cladophoraceae in the order Euphorbiaceae. The algae are thread-like, unbranched, and have rhizoids. The cells are large, and the filaments have a rough texture like a row of string beads. Several species are known in Japan, but on the Pacific coast, C. spiralis and C. crassa in particular grow in the lower intertidal zone below the low tide line, and are often found among washed-up algae, as they are wrapped around various other seaweeds. The former is highly curled like a strongly twisted thread, while the latter is softer than the former and often forms large clumps. C. moniligena , a member of the same genus, grows in the upper intertidal zone, and although its bodies grow upright and in clumps, they do not form clumps. The upper cells are swollen and spherical.
