Julien Gracq

French author. His real name was Louis Poirier. He was born in Saint-Florent-le-Vieille, a small village on the lower Loire River. He studied at the lycée in Nantes and then in Paris, where he was taught by the philosopher Alain. He graduated from the École Normale Supérieure in Paris. His debut work, At the Castle of Argol (1938), was praised by Breton as a milestone in Surrealism. He joined the army as a second lieutenant in 1939, was captured by the German army the following year, but fell ill and returned to Japan. From then until 1969, he worked as a professor of history and geography at high schools around the country, while publishing dense works. His refined writing style, developments filled with premonitions of fate and revelation, and high level of completion have always won him passionate readers. His works include the novels "The Gloomy Beautiful Young Man" (1945), "The Banks of Silt" (1951), "The Forest Balcony" (1958), and "Peninsula" (1970), the play "The Fisher King" (1948), a collection of prose poems "Great Freedom" (1947), and collections of essays "Partiality" (1961), "Flower Letters" (1967), "Reading and Writing" (1981), and "The Roadside Notebook" (1992).

フランスの作家。本名ルイ・ポアリエ。ロアール川下流の小村サン・フロラン・ル・ビエイユに生まれる。ナント、ついでパリの高等中学校（リセ）に学び哲学者アランの教えを受ける。パリ高等師範卒業。処女作『アルゴールの城にて』（1938）は、ブルトンによりシュルレアリスムの一到達点として評価された。1939年陸軍少尉として従軍、翌年独軍捕虜となるが病を得て帰国。以後1969年まで各地の高校の歴史地理教授を歴任するかたわら、密度の高い作品を発表。彫琢(ちょうたく)された文体、宿命と啓示の予感に満ちた展開、完成度の高さは、つねに熱烈な愛読者を得た。小説『陰鬱(いんうつ)な美青年』（1945）、『シルトの岸辺』（1951）、『森のバルコニー』（1958）、『半島』（1970）、戯曲『漁夫王』（1948）、散文詩集『大いなる自由』（1947）、評論集『偏愛』（1961）、『花文字』（1967）、『読みながら書きながら』（1981）、『街道の手帖(てちょう)』（1992）などがある。
