… Taylor was a Manchester cotton manufacturer and distributor, but participated in the electoral reform movement in the first half of the 19th century, and published the paper as its spokesman. It played an active role in the electoral reform and repeal of the Corn Laws, and became the representative organ of the Manchester School of Cobden, Bright, and others. From 1848 to 1861, Jeremiah Garnett, an employee since the paper's founding, became editor-in-chief, and the paper became more conservative and more pro-Palmerston. It had been published twice a week since 1836, but from July 2, 1855 it became a daily paper, and in 1857 the price was reduced to one penny. In 1868, the Manchester Evening News was published, solidifying the paper's foundation. …
