East-West trade

Japanese: 東西貿易 - とうざいぼうえき（英語表記）east‐west trade

This refers to trade between socialist countries (East) and capitalist countries (West). After World War II, the Eastern bloc established the order of trade and international finance through the COMECON system, centered on the Soviet Union, while the Western bloc established an American-led trade and finance system centered on GATT and the IMF. These two systems themselves have changed over the 30 years since the end of the war, so East-West trade has increased in comparison with trade within each region. Dissatisfaction with the international division of labor within COMECON, efforts by Western companies to expand their sales channels, and China's retreat from the Soviet Union and rapprochement with Western countries have all been driving forces behind the expansion of East-West trade, but on the other hand, rising tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union have been a factor in restricting East-West trade.

社会主義諸国(東)と資本主義諸国(西)との間の貿易をいう。第2次大戦後，東側ではソ連を中心とするCOMECON（コメコン）体制によって域内の貿易･国際金融の秩序を形成，西側ではGATT（ガツト）とIMF(国際通貨基金)を中心とするアメリカ主導型の貿易･金融体制を創設した。この二つの体制それ自体戦後30年余を経て変質しているので，各域内貿易に対して，東西貿易も増加してきた。COMECON内国際分業への不満，西側企業の販路拡大努力，中国の対ソ離反･対西側諸国接近などは東西貿易拡大の原動力となったが，他方，米ソ間の緊張の高まりは，東西貿易抑制の要因となってきた。
