A general term for mammals of the order Rodentia, family Muridae, subfamily Hydromyinae, many of which have adapted to aquatic life. Found in Australia, New Guinea, and the Philippines. Body size varies widely, from 8 to 35 cm in body length and 8 to 35 cm in tail length, and weight ranges from 17 to 1,300 g. The molars are simple and bowl-shaped, and the third molars on the upper and lower jaws are absent or vestigial. Aquatic species have well-developed webbed feet on their hind feet. There are 13 genera and about 20 species. 多くのものが水生に適応している齧歯(げつし)目ネズミ科ミズネズミ亜科Hydromyinaeの哺乳類の総称。オーストラリア,ニューギニア,フィリピンに分布。体の大きさは変異に富み,体長8~35cm,尾長8~35cm,体重17~1300g。臼歯(きゆうし)は単純で鉢形を呈し,上下顎(じようかがく)の第3臼歯はないか,または痕跡的である。水生のものでは後足に水かきが発達する。13属約20種よりなる。 もっとも代表的なのはオーストラリアミズネズミ(オオミズネズミ,ビーバーネズミ)Hydromys chrysogasterで,オーストラリア,タスマニア,ニューギニアなどに分布する。
