Kabayama ruins

Japanese: 樺山遺跡 - かばやまいせき

This site from the Early to Late Jomon period is located on a river terrace on the left bank of the Kitakami River, at the western foot of the Kitakami Highlands, in Oyachi, Inase-machi, Kitakami City, Iwate Prefecture. It is known for its stone-arranged remains. Since 1951, it has been excavated frequently by the Iwate Prefectural Board of Education and the Kitakami City Board of Education. The site stretches long and narrow from east to west, and in the western part of the site, the remains of pit dwellings from the Early and Middle periods, hearth remains, storage pits, jar coffin remains, and relic-bearing layers have been discovered. In the central area, 32 stone-arranged remains from the Middle period have been discovered. They are small, with flat stones arranged around a standing stone, and in some cases there is a small pit beneath the stones.

岩手県北上市稲瀬町字大谷地，北上高地の西麓にあたる北上川左岸の河岸段丘上に立地する縄文時代前期～後期の遺跡。配石遺構を伴うことで知られる。1951年以降，岩手県教育委員会や北上市教育委員会によってしばしば発掘調査が行われた。遺跡は東西に細長くひろがり，その西部に前･中期の竪穴住居跡，炉跡，貯蔵穴，甕棺遺構，遺物包含層が発見されている。中央部には中期に属する配石遺構が32基検出されている。立石の周囲に平石を配した小型のもので，配石下には小さな竪穴を伴う場合がある。
