Born: February 19, 1841, Tortosa
[Died] August 19, 1922, Barcelona. Spanish musicologist and composer. He was almost entirely self-taught. As a boy, he was a choir member at Tortosa Cathedral, and from 1895 to 1903, he was a professor at the Madrid Conservatory. In addition to collecting and publishing Spanish old songs and sacred music, he produced such talented students as I. Albéniz, E. Granados, and M. Faria, and contributed greatly to the development of modern Spanish music. His main work is the opera Les Pyrenees (1902).

スペインの音楽学者，作曲家。ほとんど独学で音楽を学んだ。少年時代はトルトサ大聖堂の合唱隊員，1895～1903年マドリード音楽院教授。スペインの古歌曲や宗教音楽を収集して出版するほか，I.アルベニス，E.グラナドス，M.ファリアら優秀な門下生を出して，近代スペイン音楽の発展に尽した。主作品はオペラ『ピレネー山脈』 (1902) 。
