Born: February 19, 1841, Tortosa [Died] August 19, 1922, Barcelona. Spanish musicologist and composer. He was almost entirely self-taught. As a boy, he was a choir member at Tortosa Cathedral, and from 1895 to 1903, he was a professor at the Madrid Conservatory. In addition to collecting and publishing Spanish old songs and sacred music, he produced such talented students as I. Albéniz, E. Granados, and M. Faria, and contributed greatly to the development of modern Spanish music. His main work is the opera Les Pyrenees (1902).
