The narrow base of the optic vesicle that protrudes from the forebrain when the eyes of vertebrates develop. This part connects to the forebrain and later forms the optic nerve. In crustaceans such as the decapods and stomatopods, a thin rod-like part extends from the head, with the eyes at the end of it; this rod-like part is called the eyestalk. Inside the eyestalk is a group of neurosecretory cells called the X organ, whose axon terminals gather together to form the sinus gland, and the neurosecretory substance from this gland has an inhibitory effect on molting. Furthermore, the rear pair of antennae of mollusks such as snails has eyes at their tips, so the antennal part is called the eyestalk.
