This perennial, bright green, soft aquatic plant grows in ponds, streams, and muddy areas and belongs to the ferns of the Lycopodium subphylum and the Cercopiaceae family (illustration). Its Japanese name comes from its resemblance to Chinese chives. The stem is a tuber divided into three parts and undergoes secondary growth. Numerous roots emerge from the lower part of the tuber. Numerous leaves grow in clusters, are 20-30 cm long, and are elongated, square-shaped, cylindrical, tapering to a sharp tip. The base is white, spreading oval, and has a triangular ligule on the surface of the leaf. Sporangia are attached to the surface of the leaf base.
