Hemodialysis

…When the kidneys' waste excretion function is severely impaired due to renal failure, a dialyzer (commonly called an artificial kidney) is used to dialyze and filter the blood. It is also called hemodialysis. It was experimentally performed in the 1910s, but it was not until the 1950s that it became widely used.
