Edo Hizen no Jo

Japanese: 江戸肥前掾 - えど・ひぜんのじょう

Year of birth: Year of birth and death unknown. A Hizen-bushi tayu from the early Edo period. He was very popular in the Kanbun and Enpo eras (1661-81). Son of Sugiyama Tangonojo. His childhood name was Inosuke, later Shichirobei. In the first year of Kanbun, he was appointed Hizennojo Fujiwara Kiyomasa. He had a soft storytelling style influenced by his father, and was apparently skilled in puppet performances, especially karakuri. However, in the second year of Tenna (1682), his theatre was absorbed into the Satsuma-za. The storytelling was passed down to his disciple Edo Handayu the first, and further developed into the Kato-bushi style by Edo Handayu Kato (the first Tossunmi Kato).

江戸前期の肥前節の太夫。寛文・延宝期(1661～81)にもてはやされた。杉山丹後掾の子。幼名は伊之助,のち七郎兵衛。寛文1年受領して肥前掾藤原清政。父の風を受けたやわらかい語り口で,人形の演出,特にからくりに優れていたらしい。しかしその劇場は天和2(1682)年,薩摩座に吸収される。語り物は弟子の初代江戸半太夫に伝承され,さらにその弟子江戸太夫河東(初代十寸見河東)の河東節に発展した。
