Also written as Kafu or Shinafu. A cloth made by peeling the bark of the linden tree, shredding it into thin strips, spinning it into thread, and weaving it on a loom. Usually called "Manda cloth" or "Manda cloth," it is a strong, coarse-feeling cloth with a natural brownish color. It was also used as farm clothing and mountain wear, but because it is very hard to the touch, there is little demand for it, and it is only produced in small quantities in parts of the border between Yamagata and Niigata prefectures. It has almost no uses as clothing, and until recently, in the countryside of the Tohoku region, it was used as a lining for the inside of steamers (seiro), and because it is water-resistant, it was used as a fish bag for fishing.
