Moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita)

Japanese: ミズクラゲ(水水母) - ミズクラゲ（英語表記）Aurelia aurita

A coelenterate (cnidaria) belonging to the family Aurelia in the class Scyphomedusa (illustration). It is also called the four-eyed jellyfish (four-eyed jellyfish) due to the shape of its reproductive glands. It is commonly seen in the waters near Japan, and is distributed in almost all oceans of the world except for cold current regions. The cap is slightly raised rather than disc-shaped, and most individuals are 20 to 30 cm in diameter, with some rare specimens reaching 40 cm. The edge of the cap is divided into eight equal parts, with sensory organs at each boundary, and a row of small tentacles densely growing from above the edge. There are four large oral arms, and a groove in the center of the underside, where the mouth opens.

ハチクラゲ綱ミズクラゲ科に属する腔腸動物(刺胞動物)（イラスト）。生殖腺の形からヨツメクラゲ(四ツ目水母)とも呼ばれる。日本近海にごくふつうに見られる。また寒流域を除いたほぼ全世界の海に分布している。傘は円盤状より多少盛り上がり，直径が20～30cmの個体が多く，まれに40cmになるものもある。傘の縁は8等分していて，その境ごとに感覚器があり，また縁の上方から小さい触手が1列に密生している。口腕は4本で大きく，下側中央に溝があって，その溝が合一するところに口が開いている。
