…In 1826, the Janissaries, who had been disbanded by the Ottoman Empire's reforms, launched a major revolt. These reforms aimed to eliminate the influence of Turkish landlords who had exacted heavy taxes from Christian peasants (Raja, Leja) and to strengthen centralization. In response to these reforms, the conservative Muslim native ruling class of Bosnia and Herzegovina, who were determined to maintain their privileges, resisted. In 1851, Omer Paşa Latas (1806-71) suppressed the latter's efforts. He moved the provincial capital back to Sarajevo and remodeled the city to be a suitable seat of government. …
