Urakawahara [village] - Urakawahara

Japanese: 浦川原[村] - うらがわら

A village in Higashikubiki County in southern Niigata Prefecture. Population 4,388 (1995). A farming and mountain village at the northwestern edge of the Higashikubiki Hills, with the Hokura River flowing west through the center. The central settlement, Arishima, is at the mouth of this valley, and in 1916 the terminus of the Kubiki Railway from Naoetsu was established here, and the area flourished as the gateway to Higashikubiki County and its economic center. The station was named Urakawahara after the name of the area, and was adopted as the name of the new village when part of Yasuzuka Village and Shimohokura Village were merged in 1955. The Kubiki Railway was abolished in 1971, but the Hokuetsu Express Hokuhoku Line was completed in 1997, and Mushikawa-Osugi Station is now located there.

新潟県南部，東頸城（ひがしくびき）郡の村。人口4388(1995)。東頸城丘陵北西端にあたる農山村で，保倉川が中央を西流する。中心集落有島はこの谷口にあたり，1916年に直江津からの頸城鉄道の終着駅が置かれ，東頸城郡の玄関口，経済の中心地として栄えた。駅名は字名をとって浦川原とされ，55年に安塚村の一部と下保倉村が合体した際に新村名に採用された。71年に頸城鉄道は廃止されたが，97年北越急行ほくほく線が完成し，虫川大杉駅がある。
