A gold and silver mine located in northeastern Hokkaido, about 25km south of the downtown area of Monbetsu. It is located in the upper valley of the Mobetsu River. It was discovered in 1915. It was transferred to Sumitomo Metal Mining in 1917, and mining began the following year in 1918. There is a mining village, a smelter, and a settling pond. The deposit is an epithermal vein in which volcanic rock penetrates the Neogene layer, and is a quartz vein containing gold and silver. In 1971, the mine was reduced to one third in order to streamline operations. The annual production targets were set at 320kg of gold, 9.7t of silver, and 220t of ore processing per day. It was the largest gold mine in Japan, but closed in 1973 when gold was liberalized.
