China Road - Chugokuji

Japanese: 中国路 - ちゅうごくじ

During the Edo period, this road ran along the Seto Inland Sea and was called a side road. It was also called the Saigoku Kaido or Sanyo Road. There are theories that it started in Osaka or Kyoto and ended in Shimonoseki or Dairi (Moji City) in Buzen. The status of the ancient Sanyo Road declined after the Middle Ages, and the number of passengers was low due to the use of the Seto Inland Sea route. There were always 25 people and 25 horses at each post station, and most were small.

江戸時代，瀬戸内海沿いの道で，脇街道。西国(さいごく)街道・山陽(さんよう)道などとも。起点は大坂あるいは京都，終点は下関(しものせき)あるいは豊前の大里(だいり)（門司市）などの説がある。古代の山陽道が中世以降地位が低下，瀬戸内海航路の利用もあって通行量も少なかった。宿駅の常備人馬は25人・25疋で，多くは小規模。
