Relative Death - Aitaiji ni

Japanese:
Relative Death - Aitaiji ni

A legal term for love suicide and double suicide in the Edo Shogunate. The words love suicide and double suicide were glorified by the joruri puppet theatre of Chikamatsu Monzaemon and others, and even men and women of the time tended to glorify them. In order to correct the decadent trend, the eighth shogun, Tokugawa Yoshimune, issued a prohibition called "sotojishi" in 1722 (Kyoho 7). In other words, if a couple committed an illicit double suicide, their bodies would be discarded and they would not be allowed to mourn, and if both parties were still alive, they would be exposed to the public for three days and made into hininteka (outcasts). He announced this throughout Edo in the following year of Kyoho 8.
