Water tricks - Mizugei

Japanese:
Water tricks - Mizugei

A general term for magic tricks and acrobatics using real water. Also called Mizukarakuri. Mizukarakuri shows, which use intricately crafted and gimmicked puppets, have been performed by the Takeda Karakuri troupe and others since the Kanbun period (1661-1673). In 1806 (Bunka 3), a Mizukarakuri performance was held in Osu, Nagoya, and amazed audiences with the spectacle of water spurting from a choshi (water bottle), fruit, a tobacco tray, a jar, a sword, and other objects. The method used was to connect thin tubes from the wings of the stage to the performers' hands and feet and then open and close the water taps in the background in time with the speech and music. These techniques were also incorporated into Kabuki and puppet theater. At the end of the Meiji period, the magician Shokyosai Tenkatsu I also made water performances his specialty. In the Shinpa play "Taki no Shiraito," this water trick scene is one of the highlights.
