Chóng Lí (English spelling)

Japanese: 重黎 - ちょうれい（英語表記）Chóng Lí

A god who appears in the Chinese creation tale. In the Great Rough Western Classic of the Shan Hai Jing, it is written that the emperor commanded Chong and Li to separate heaven and earth, and in the Book of Documents, Lü Xing, Chiyou caused rebellion and the Miao people committed atrocities, so he commanded Chongli to separate heaven and earth. Lü Xing is a scripture that depicts the struggle between the Jiang family and the Miao people, but Chongli appears to be in the lineage of the former Duke of Chu, and this tale is likely to show the role of Chu at that time. The Chu Language of the National Language also says that this was to separate the people and the gods.

中国の開闢（かいびやく）説話にみえる神。《山海経（せんがいきよう）》大荒西経に，帝が重と黎とに命じて天地を隔てさせたことがみえ，《書経》呂刑（りよけい）では蚩尤（しゆう）が乱を作（お）こし，苗（びよう）民が虐を為すので，重黎に命じて天地を隔絶させたとする。〈呂刑〉は姜（きよう）姓と苗民との闘争を経典化したものであるが，重黎は楚の先公としてその世系にみえ，当時の楚の役割を示す説話であろう。《国語》楚語にも，民と神とを分かつためであったとしている。
