Edward Calvert

British printmaker. Born in Devonshire. After studying at the Royal Academy, he formed the group "The Ancients" with S. Palmer and others, who surrounded Blake in his later years. During his time at Shoreham (1824-31), he produced 13 prints inspired by Blake's "Virgil's Idylls." The wood engravings from this period are representative of his art. His works, full of poetic emotion and themed on a blissful pastoral life, have Blake's visionary eye hidden within their simplicity. In later years, he turned to mediocre painting.

イギリスの版画家。デボンシャーに生まれる。王立アカデミーで学んだ後，晩年のブレークを囲んでS.パーマーらとグループ〈古代人（エインシエンツ）〉を結成。そのショアハム時代(1824‐31)にブレークの《バージルの田園詩》に感銘を受けた版画13点を制作。この時代の木口木版が彼の芸術を代表する。至福の牧歌的生活を主題とした詩情あふれるその作品には，素朴さの中にブレーク流の幻視者の目が潜んでいる。後年凡庸な絵画制作に転じた。
