1799‐1883 British printmaker. Born in Devonshire. After studying at the Royal Academy, he formed the group "The Ancients" with S. Palmer and others, who surrounded Blake in his later years. During his time at Shoreham (1824-31), he produced 13 prints inspired by Blake's "Virgil's Idylls." The wood engravings from this period are representative of his art. His works, full of poetic emotion and themed on a blissful pastoral life, have Blake's visionary eye hidden within their simplicity. In later years, he turned to mediocre painting.
