A Jomon period shell mound in Kamijishi, Izumi City, Kagoshima Prefecture. It is located on a tongue-shaped plateau where the end of the Hirara River alluvial fan in the Izumi Plain overlooks the Yonezu River. It was excavated in 1920 by Kyoto University (Hamada Kosaku), and in 1954 by Kawaguchi Sadanori and Yamauchi Kiyoo. The shell mound is an inland bay shell mound that is mainly composed of oysters, but also contains shellfish such as clams, ostriches, and sea snails. In addition to the bones of wild boars, deer, and dogs, the remains of a horse believed to be a dwarf horse were discovered, drawing attention. Excavated pottery includes mold-patterned pottery (early Jomon) from below the Akahoya layer, Namiki-style, Ataka-style (middle), and Nanpukuji-style (late) pottery from below the shell layer, and mainly Izumi-style pottery (late) with a patterned band on the thickened rim made by short sunken lines from within the shell layer.
