The palmate leaves are fan-shaped, 1-1.5 m in diameter, and are tough, leathery, and shiny. The petiole is about 2 m long and has spiny teeth at the edge. The flowers are dioecious. The fruit is a spherical drupe that is 15-70 cm in diameter and ripens to a black-brown color. Native to tropical Africa, it has long been cultivated in South Asia, especially in somewhat dry areas such as India, Sri Lanka, and Malaysia, and has become naturalized in some places.
