Japanese: ウチワヤンマ - うちわやんま

An insect of the Odonata family, Acanthodidae (illustration). It is the largest of its kind in Japan, reaching a body length of about 8 cm. The male's eighth abdominal segment has a semicircular leaflet attached to it, hence the name. It is commonly found in ponds and lakes on flat land from Aomori to Kagoshima. On the continent, it is found in the Korean Peninsula and through China to Tonkin. It is not uncommon in Taiwan, but not in the Ryukyu Islands. It is often found in Honshu from May to July, and mature males fly around the inner periphery of water bodies and rest on poles.

トンボ目サナエトンボ科の昆虫（イラスト）。日本にいるものではこの科のうちもっとも大型で，体長約8cm。雄の第8腹節には半円形の葉片がついているのでこの名がある。雌ではこれは小さい。青森から鹿児島まで，平地の池沼，あるいは湖でふつうに見られる。大陸では朝鮮半島，中国を通じてトンキンにまで至る。台湾にも少なくないが，琉球諸島には見られない。本州では5～7月ころ多く出現し，成熟した雄は水域の内周を飛翔（ひしよう）し，棒上に静止する。
