Michel Aflaq

Syrian politician and political thinker. Born in Damascus, he was an Eastern Orthodox Christian. He studied in Paris in the 1930s. In the 1940s, he co-founded the Ba'ath Party with Salah al-Din al-Bitar Ṣalāḥ al-Din al-Biṭār (1912-80) and served as its secretary-general from 1947 to 1965. In 1949, he became Minister of Education. After the Ba'ath Party took power in 1963, he led the civilian and moderate faction within the party. In 1966, he was expelled from the party by the radical military faction and went into exile in Lebanon, Brazil, and other countries, but in 1969 he was invited to Iraq and became secretary-general of the Ba'ath Party's national leadership based in Baghdad.

シリアの政治家，政治思想家。ダマスクス生れの東方正教徒。1930年代にパリで学ぶ。40年代サラーフ･アッディーン･アルビタールṢalāḥ al‐Dīn al‐Biṭār(1912‐80)とともにバース党を創設し，47年から65年まで書記長を務めた。49年に文相となる。63年にバース党が政権を掌握したあと党内の文民･穏健派を指揮した。66年急進的な軍人派に党を追われ，レバノン，ブラジルなどに亡命するが，69年イラクに招聘されバグダードを拠点とするバース党民族指導部の書記長となる。
