A genus of Rubiaceae native to warm regions of South America, there are about 50 species, but several are cultivated in greenhouses. The commonly seen Manettsia inflata (Japanese name: Aragekaensou) is a creeping perennial with egg-lanceolate leaves arranged in opposite rows. In spring, it produces tubular flowers about 2.5 cm long at the end of flower stalks emerging from the leaf axils. The corolla is covered with coarse hairs, the tube is crimson red, and the tip is yellow and has four lobes. It is usually planted in a pot and trained as a lantern.
