A city in southern Osaka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1922. The central city area facing Osaka Bay developed as a castle town of the Okabe clan from the Kan'ei era onwards, and from the mid-Meiji period onwards developed into a textile manufacturing city, mainly producing Senshu cotton fabrics. Metal, machinery and equipment, ceramics and lens industries are also active here, and since 1966 a timber complex and ironworks complex have been built on reclaimed land in the coastal area. In addition to rice, which is irrigated by reservoirs, onions, mandarin oranges and flowers (persimmons) are cultivated in the northern foothills of the Izumi Mountains and on the plateau. The city is served by the Hanwa Line, the Nankai Electric Railway Main Line and the Hanwa Expressway. It has an area of 72.68 km2 and a population of 199,234 (2010). 大阪府南部の市。1922年市制。大阪湾に臨む中心市街は寛永年間以降岡部氏の城下町として発達,明治中期以後は泉州綿織物を主とする紡織工業都市として発展した。金属,機械器具,窯業,レンズ工業も行われ,臨海部の埋立地には1966年以降木材コンビナート,鉄工団地が建設された。和泉山脈北麓と台地では溜池灌漑(ためいけかんがい)による米のほかタマネギ,ミカン,花卉(かき)を栽培。阪和線,南海電鉄本線,阪和自動車道が通じる。72.68km2。19万9234人(2010)。
