A city in southern Osaka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1922. The central city area facing Osaka Bay developed as a castle town of the Okabe clan from the Kan'ei era onwards, and from the mid-Meiji period onwards developed into a textile manufacturing city, mainly producing Senshu cotton fabrics. Metal, machinery and equipment, ceramics and lens industries are also active here, and since 1966 a timber complex and ironworks complex have been built on reclaimed land in the coastal area. In addition to rice, which is irrigated by reservoirs, onions, mandarin oranges and flowers (persimmons) are cultivated in the northern foothills of the Izumi Mountains and on the plateau. The city is served by the Hanwa Line, the Nankai Electric Railway Main Line and the Hanwa Expressway. It has an area of ​​72.68 km2 and a population of 199,234 (2010).
