A fern that forms mats on rocks in the mountains and fields, on tree trunks, or on the ground. A small herbaceous plant of the Brynostigma family. The leaf diameter is 1.5 cm, and the plant is up to 2 cm tall. The rhizome is thin and branches as it creeps, forming a mat-like colony. The petiole is about 1 cm long and has no wings, very similar to the rhizome. The leaf blade spreads palmately, with irregularly cut edges, giving it a fan-like shape, hence the name Uchiwagoke (fan moss). The sporangia are attached to the leaf margins, the intumescent membrane is cup-shaped with slightly spreading edges, and the sporangia beds extend long.
