Scyllaridae, Decapoda, Malacostraca. Body length about 15cm. Body color purple-red. Dorsal and ventral sides are extremely flattened, with the cephalothorax and second antennae being particularly wide. Found south of the Boso Peninsula and as far as the Philippines, it inhabits sandy and muddy bottoms at depths of less than 100m. It is edible, but has little meat. The closely related I. novemdentatus is light yellowish brown and has coarse notches on the lateral edges of the cephalothorax (I. novemdentatus is 11-12, I. novemdentatus is 8). Scyllaridae are generally more or less flattened, with the second antennae being particularly distinctive. 軟甲綱十脚目セミエビ科 Scyllaridae。体長約 15cm。体は紫赤色。背腹は著しく扁平で,頭胸甲と第2触角は特に幅広い。房総半島以南,フィリピンまで分布し,水深 100m以浅の砂泥底に生息する。食用とされるが,肉量は少ない。近縁のオオバウチワエビ I. novemdentatus は淡黄褐色で,頭胸甲側縁の切れ込みが粗い(ウチワエビは 11~12,オオバウチワエビは 8)。セミエビ科は一般に多少とも扁平で,特に第2触角が特徴的である。英名では shovel-nosed lobster,slipper lobster,butterfly lobsterなど総称的に呼ばれる。(→甲殻類,十脚類,節足動物,軟甲類)
